Electronic Blocks: Tangible Programming Elements for Preschoolers
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of Electronic Blocks, blocks with electronic circuits inside them. By placing Electronic Blocks on top of one another young children build “computer programs” – each stack of Electronic Blocks is capable of a different function. Significantly, the blocks programming input and program output are based in the physical world, with the digital implementation completely hidden from the children. Preliminary studies have found that children aged between four and six are capable of using the blocks to create robots that crash into each other, remote control cars, and lights that flash when you clap. Most children became heavily engaged with the blocks, and learnt simple programming with a minimum of adult support.

متن کاملBoda blocks: a collaborative tool for exploring tangible three-dimensional cellular automata
Construction kits like traditional building blocks provide excellent media for face-toface collaborative interaction. The complexity and expressive power of these kits are increasingly being augmented with computational elements like controllable lights, motors and sounds. This paper introduces a computationally enhanced set of building blocks, Boda Blocks, which allows for collaborative intera...
متن کاملDesigning a Motivated Tangible Multimedia System for Preschoolers
The paper examined the capability of a prototype of a tangible multimedia system that was augmented with tangible objects in motivating young preschoolers in learning. Preschoolers’ learning behaviour is highly captivated and motivated by external physical stimuli. Hence, conventional multimedia which solely dependent on digital visual and auditory formats for knowledge delivery could potential...

متن کاملDesigning a Working Memory Capacity Test for Cognitive-friendly Tangible Multimedia
A working memory capacity (WMC) test called “objects-span tri-tasks” is designed for preschoolers undergoing treatment using a new genre of multimedia, tangible multimedia, created by the authors. It tests the dual-functions of the preschoolers’ working memory (WM), namely storage and manipulation capacity, essential in supporting academic skills. The third task in the test is the overt setting...
